Here at Travel Insurance Explained HQ, we always keep an eye on what travel expert Paul Charles (Twitter @PPaulCharles) is saying.  His latest predictions today, give us a glimmer of hope that when ministers announce a revamp of the travel rules tomorrow, that Grant Shapps is set to announce a whole host of new destinations to the green travel list.

According to recent predictions, the following countries are showing that they should be added to the green list – Austria, Bhutan, Bosnia, Canada, Czech Republic, French Polynesia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Saudi Arabia.

Any changes to the Travel List announced tomorrow, are expected to come into effect early next week.  The countries and the lists are only reviewed every 3 weeks.  So, the announcement tomorrow is the most important if we are to get that holiday abroad this summer.

Furthermore, if you are planning a holiday abroad this summer, don’t forget to ensure you have travel insurance that will offer cover for all the emerging risks of travelling during a pandemic.  Cover to look out for is:

  • Cover for emergency medical expenses if you should fall ill with Covid-19 while abroad
  • Cover for self-isolation costs in the event you test positive for Covid-19 are required to quarantine in your accommodation abroad
  • Cover for trip cancellation if you test positive for Covid-19 before your holiday is due to take place
  • Cover for trip cancellation if you are told to self-isolate by NHS Track and Trace after coming into close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19
  • Cover for accommodation and transportation costs if you fail your pre-departure test before returning to the UK

It is important to note, the above travel insurance cover is not standard across UK travel insurance policies.  So, if you require any or all of the above cover, you will need to carefully check policy wordings, and contact insurers directly and ask if the cover you require is included in their policies.  It is also worth remembering, that you have 14 days from when you purchase your policy to check it through and then if the cover doesn’t meet your requirements, you can cancel the policy for a full refund, provided you have not travelled or made a claim on the policy.
