Italy has tightened its domestic restrictions for both residents and tourists in an attempt to reduce the spread of coronavirus infections. The popular European tourist destination recorded just over 117,000* new cases today alone.

From Monday (January 10, 2022), anyone accessing public transport or venues, including restaurants, hotels, and ski lifts, will be required to show a “super green pass” to prove their vaccine status or a recovery from a Covid-19 diagnosis. The “super green pass” requirement applies to everyone aged over 12-years-old.

The NHS Covid Pass QR code can be used as a “super green pass” for British travellers, and was extended to cover 12-15-year-olds for international travel in December 2021.

Italy has also removed the option for unvaccinated people to show a negative test result instead of the “green pass”. This means that unvaccinated travellers will no longer be able to enter venues or facilities that require the “super green pass”.

What’s more, from February, 2022, Italy is set to impose a validity period of six months on proof of vaccination status. This means that travellers who received their second Covid-19 vaccine over six months ago will be required to show proof of a booster jab to access facilities.

Brits visiting Italian holiday and ski destinations must familiarise themselves with the new domestic Covid-19 rules or risk being caught out by the new restrictions.

It’s worth being aware that failure to provide the necessary documentation upon arrival to a holiday destination, whether that’s an in-date and valid passport, vaccination status, and/or covid test result, could result in travellers being denied entry to the country.

Denied entry to a destination is not something a travel insurance provider would cover and, therefore, travellers would be responsible for covering the cost of any new flights, accommodation, or emergency documentation.
