As international travel slowly starts to resume, we remind travellers of the importance of declaring any existing or previous medical conditions to their travel insurance provider.

Reports of a British man sadly passing away in Greece have made headlines this week after his family issued an urgent appeal to the public to help them raise funds to bring his body back to the UK.

The man suffered a heart attack while on holiday in Kos. Articles covering the story have explained that the Brit’s travel insurance provider would not cover the costs to fly his body home as he had not declared a previous heart attack when buying his policy.

While medical declaration can be extensive and take time to complete, it is important that travellers declare any existing or previous medical conditions to their travel insurance provider.

Medical treatment abroad can leave you considerably out of pocket if you don’t have suitable travel insurance in place. And failing to fully declare your medical history means your travel insurer may not cover any costs if the illness is linked to your undeclared condition.

What’s more, should the worst happen and you pass away while abroad, your family may be responsible for covering any outstanding medical bills as well as the cost of flying your body home.

So, it’s always best to tell your travel insurer about any medical conditions you have (no matter how big or small) and travel with peace of mind knowing that you’re fully protected.
